The story behind UGG

UGG started in 1978 in Southern California, when Australian surfer Brian Smith began selling sheepskin boots to surfers who wanted something warm to pull on after a cold morning in the water. The boots were soft, easy to slip on and built around a simple idea: sheepskin keeps your feet warm in winter while still letting them breathe. That idea is still at the heart of the brand.

Over the years the boot moved from the beach to the street and became a fixed part of winter fashion. In the last few seasons UGG has had a real second wave. Favourite colorways right now

The warm brown tones are the best sellers by far. Chestnut is the classic UGG colour and works on almost every model, from the UGG Lowmel Chestnut (W) to the UGG Classic Ultra Mini Platform Chestnut. Burnt Cedar is a slightly deeper brown that has become very popular on the Ultra Mini, both as the regular UGG Classic Ultra Mini Boot Burnt Cedar and as the platform. Prefer something lighter? Sand, Ceramic and Antilope are soft neutral shades that look great with cream knitwear and light denim. The UGG Lowmel Sand (W) and UGG Lowmel Rocky Oak are good examples.

UGG for women, men and kids

Most people searching for uggs are looking for women's sizes, and that is where the biggest choice is. Women's models are marked with (W). UGG also makes plenty of men's versions, often in darker colours such as black, dark grey and chestnut, and the Lowmel in particular is a popular UGG sneaker for men. Kids' sizes are marked (GS) for older children, (Kids) or (TD) for the youngest.

Which UGG size should I take?

UGG sizing is based on US sizes, and many models only come in whole sizes. Sheepskin lining also gives a little over time and moulds to your foot. Because of that, most people take their usual size, and if you are between two sizes the general advice is to go down rather than up. A slipper like the Tasman should feel snug at first. The Lowmel fits more like a regular sneaker, and the Ultra Mini sits close around the foot without pinching.

UGG pantoffels, boots or sneakers: how to wear them

UGG slippers like the Tasman and Tazz are made for more than the living room. They have a proper outsole, so you can wear them to the supermarket or to school pickup just as easily. Pair them with wide joggers or a straight leg jean that falls over the top. The Ultra Mini works well with leggings, flared trousers or a loose tracksuit, and fits nicely with a cosy hoodie or sweater. The Lowmel is the most versatile model and fits easily into an everyday sneaker rotation.
