What makes Nike Air Max special?

Nike started using Air cushioning in its running shoes in the late seventies, but for years the Air units were hidden inside the midsole. That changed in 1987 when Tinker Hatfield designed the Air Max 1 with a window in the side of the sole, so you could actually see the air bubble under your heel. It was a small detail that turned into a design language.

Since then every new Air Max has pushed the idea a little further: bigger Air units, Air in the forefoot, and eventually a visible Air unit that runs the full length of the shoe. Many of these models started out as serious running shoes. Today they are mostly worn as lifestyle sneakers, but the comfort is still the reason people keep buying them. The one that started it all. The Nike Air Max 1 has a layered upper with mesh and suede or leather, a curved mudguard around the toe and the visible Air unit in the heel. Nike Air Max 95

The Nike Air Max 95, designed by Sergio Lozano, takes its look from the human body: the layered side panels refer to muscles and the midsole to the spine. It was the first Air Max with visible Air in the forefoot as well as the heel. The gradient side panels make it one of the most recognizable sneakers ever made.

Nike Air Max 97

Sleek, shiny and futuristic. The Nike Air Max 97 was the first Air Max with a visible Air unit running along the whole length of the sole. The wavy lines on the upper and the hidden lacing system give it a streamlined look that still feels modern.

Nike Air Max 180

The Nike Air Max 180 comes from the early nineties and is named after its Air unit, which you can see from almost every angle around the heel. It is a little less common than the other models, which is exactly why fans of retro runners like it.
