The story of the Air Max 1

Nike launched the Air Max 1 in 1987. It was designed by Tinker Hatfield, who had trained as an architect before he started designing footwear for Nike. His big idea was to make the Air cushioning visible. Nike had used Air units in its running shoes for years, but they were hidden inside the midsole. Hatfield cut a window in the side of the sole so you could actually see the bubble of air under your heel. The story goes that the inside-out look of the Centre Pompidou building in Paris inspired him to show the technology instead of hiding it.

That small window changed sneaker design. The visible Air unit became the signature of a whole family of shoes, and the Air Max 1 became the blueprint for everything that followed. Even the date matters to fans: Air Max Day on 26 March celebrates the anniversary of the original release, and every year Nike and sneaker stores mark it with new drops and retro releases.
